A standard mattress on a non-standard frame either leaves gaps at the edges or overhangs — both look wrong and wear unevenly.

Measuring correctly, the first time

Getting this wrong is the single most common reason a custom order goes back for correction. Measure:

• Width and length of the bed frame's inner sleeping surface (not the frame's outer dimensions) — measure at three points along each edge, since older frames are frequently slightly out of square
• Thickness clearance — how much depth the frame's rails allow before the mattress would sit above or below the frame's edge

Send exact measurements in centimetres, not just a size description ("slightly smaller than Queen") — "slightly smaller" means different things to different people, and a custom manufacturing run isn't the place for that ambiguity.

What stays the same as a standard order

A custom-size mattress uses the identical coil cores and comfort layers as the standard range it's based on — ordering custom doesn't mean ordering a lower-quality or improvised product. A custom Pocket Spring mattress gets the same individually wrapped coils as a standard one; a custom Bonnell Spring mattress gets the same interconnected coil core. Confirm this explicitly with any manufacturer — some treat custom orders as a separate, lower-spec product line, which defeats the purpose of paying for hotel-grade construction in the first place.

Custom sizes are typically priced per square foot based on your submitted dimensions, rather than at the flat per-unit pricing standard sizes carry. This means:

• A custom mattress smaller than standard Queen can come in cheaper per unit than a standard Queen
• A custom mattress larger than standard King will cost more, proportional to the extra material and manufacturing time
• Bulk custom orders (multiple mattresses to the same non-standard specification, common in heritage hotels renovating a full wing) still get bulk pricing — send total quantity alongside dimensions when requesting a quote

Timeline expectations

Custom manufacturing takes longer than shipping from standard-range stock, since nothing is pre-built to a non-standard dimension. Build this into renovation or launch planning — request a manufacturing timeline in writing when you place the order, not just a price, especially if the custom order is tied to a property opening date.

When custom size isn't actually the answer

If a room's bed frame is only marginally off from a standard size (within an inch or two), it's often more cost-effective to replace the bed frame to a standard size than to commit to custom mattress manufacturing indefinitely — worth a quick cost comparison before assuming custom is the only option, particularly for a property planning to furnish many rooms to the same non-standard spec.
